Top 5 Packing Mistakes to Avoid

There is nothing worse than starting your trip and realizing that you forgot to pack something important, or accidentally packed something you should have left at home.

Whether you pack well in advance of your trip or wait until the last minute to fill your suitcase, packing is never an easy endeavor. Below are the top 5 packing mistakes to avoid on your next trip!

Packing Important Documents in Checked Bags

You can pat yourself on the back for remembering to pack your passport, but it will do you no good if it is in your checked bag underneath the plane or being loaded on the cruise ship.

You will need your passport to check in and get through security so keep your passport and other important documents such as birth certificates with you.

Packing Prohibited Items

You can see security taking an extra look at your bag and then you hear those dreaded words, “Whose bag is this?”

Double check the prohibited items list (alcohol, liquids, weapons, drugs, etc.) before you try to board a flight or a cruise so you don’t lose valuable time going through the search process with security.

Depending on what you packed in your bag, a small delay could turn into an arrest so double check your bags before you zip them closed.

Forgetting to Check Your Kids’ Luggage

We never forget to ask our kids these important questions:

  • Do you have your toothbrush?

  • Did you pack your deodorant?

  • Do you have socks and underwear?

The answer is always an enthusiastic, “YES!”

However, in the rush of getting out of the house for the trip, parents can forget to check the bags for those important items.  Trust that your kids actually packed what they needed, but definitely verify by checking their bags!

Not Packing Accessories

It may seem like something small in the grand scheme of things, but small items like belts, socks, jackets, and even shoes can have a significant impact on your trip.

Lay out full outfits you are going to wear before you pack the items in your suitcase to avoid forgetting an important accessory.

Not Protecting Against Leaks

If you decide to bring shower gel and shampoo, for example, be sure to pack these items inside a zip lock bag or a leak proof container.

Some leaks can ruin clothes, electronics, and important documents packed in your luggage.
