The Need for Unity Inspires This Sisterhood Club To Bring Women Together and Build Self-Confidence
There’s a gem in the Greater Greenspoint community outside of Houston, Texas, who is devoted daily to empowering young women through connection and providing mental tools that can transpire across one’s life.
Tarra Love-Richmond is a wife, a mentor, and entrepreneur who believes it takes a village to create a safe haven for grooming confidence. Richmond created two entities that go hand-in-hand, although they are separate. She is the Founder and Head Coach of Type Girl, Inc., a modeling agency branding over 43 models with events and shows across Texas. Good Girlfriend is a women’s sisterhood club promoting a safe haven for togetherness -- an authentic way to truly communicate a real bond.
In our conversation, we discussed there were already a lot of social organizations for doing business, but Good Girlfriend is about honing in on life issues and planning trips and outings to celebrate common goals. Black women play an intricate role when it comes to the well-being of their families and are faced with several weights daily, from gender discrimination to racial disparities.
It’s health-conscious to have a diverse group of women from different walks of life to have incubators of love and hope amongst each other. Can you imagine the type of charge that could come from a room of women pouring into each other? We could literally power the world. Richmond tells her models to not see each other as competition, matter of fact, all models from January through December are in the same position or role. It’s a tactic to assist in building self-confidence.
Every 3 months, Good Girlfriend commits to a community service activity. The organization hosts a Tea Party and 2020 marks their 4th year where the sisterhood comes together to get dolled-up to elevate one another and even enjoy their signature ‘spiked tea’. A part of Good Girlfriend’s initiative is to host a completely free education session every month to the community.
Due to COVID-19, things for Richmond have been a little “Tricky,” but she is remaining steadfast and creating ways to be interactive virtually. Pre-pandemic, Type Girl hosted fashion shows with over 250 or more attendees and held frequent photoshoots. The modeling agency has produced talents who you might’ve seen on movies and popular music videos. Type Girl coach and train models from ages 8-99 years of age. Richmond believes it is important to create a brand based on a character you are trying to portray to the world. In addition, self-confidence and staying true to yourself is something she finds herself preaching to her models, staff, and sisterhood a lot.
